Ra Ra Raleigh- 3RD PLACE

Ruby Tuesday's was the only restaurant we were allowed in. from left: Clara, Allie, me, Kelly, Mandy, Gina. Bill was also in the house.
Here we are at the local grade school teaching them about bike racing and safety- and the wonders of Cherry soda.

Arrival in North Carolina meant humidity. My hair goes frizzy and I am always sweating. Lovely. Mandy lives in a cool little house there and Kelly, Gina, Lauren, Clara, Stephanie, Rachel and Nicole were all suited up for the twilight Leith BMW Crit in Downtown Raleigh. This course is great with 8 corners, two small risers and some fast turns. The crowds were in force and we had a great announcer who could give Phil LIgget a run for his money. As we lined up, we were amongst about 40 other women, mostly Aaron's Cycling, TravelGirl and Victory Brewing.

The race was hot from the start with many primes, some for $100 and $200. After some small breaks and solos, some with all teams represented and other times just 2 girls, the race seemed to always come back together. The primes also kept the few people involved always working hard and burning matches. It came down to a field sprint and Kelly grabbed 3rd! Then the skies opened up and a monsoon pelted us. Then we drove 5 hours to Baltimore and fell asleep at 4am.

Where in the World?

If you visited my blog and you live in Mumbai, Maharashtra India, can you post a comment and tell me who you are? I would like to have a cycling fan pen pal there. Thanks.

Arkansas Racing-Joe Martin

The racing at Joe Martin was exciting! It is a beautiful place to visit.

Attacks and more attacks, like 68 of them to be exact. Stage 1 was twisty in the beginning. We had a false flat, literally, as Kristin got pummelled by the railroad tracks. Then we went up hill for 9 miles. Charm sprang off the front to not just join, but pass, the breakaway duo. It got ugly then. A group of four bridged up and dropped Charm and gained a lot of time. Lots of people went out the back. Including me. But, I dragged my carcass back up to the group just over the top of the climb to latch back on to the group of 25 girls.
It was apparent then that the Cheerwine team missed out, so it was up to us to bring it back. on the ups, and flats, the 4 of us rotated at the front to bring the gap down. Kate bates also helped, especially on the descents. As we neared the final 5K, we were all together. The crazy finish with many turns and ups and downs was a little surprising. I managed to squeeze out a 10th place on my new Reynolds Stratus DVs, which was promising. Tina Pic of Colavita won. So I was sitting Top Ten in GC! Amazing! We saw an armadillo on the way home. But it was dead.

Stage 2 was not a good for me as I ended up flatting in the final 15 miles. The day had been going very well, I felt great and our group managed to avoid a rabid dog running out in front of us. But just as things got hot in the small rollers, I flatted. The best part was my teammate, Kelly, charged into the downhill finish for a 4th place on the day, and that was real good. Tina Pic barely beat Laura Van Giggle in a close sprint.

Then we rested for like 20 minutes and went back out to do Stage 3, the evening time trial. This is where everyone saw Charm's affinity for the color red. Kristin posted a 12th place time and none of us crashed or flatted. And we saw another armadillo! (dead) Erinne "Freebird" Willock of Webcor won.

We had some family dinner time with our hosts, thank you! Then went off to sleep for the next day's crit. It was more like a crip, cuz it made you feel crippled after. The course was crazy, the field was tired but determined, and the pace was high. Okay, I cannot describe in enough detail how hard the race was. Who actually had all that energy after just racing 3 stages in the previous 36 hours? Kristin took 7th place as Kori Seehafer of Lipton won. I rode in with my old college soccer teammate, Kendra Keeley, who I have not seen in over a dozen years. Weird how life repeats itself.

We had a nice post race visit with some distant family relatives who brought homemade cookies and then prompty took off for Kansas City. Too bad I couldn't hang with Hejduk more. He won the overall for his field and lives in KC.

Jammin Jeff, Kickin like Chicken Kelly, Bumpin Bill, Christian Kristin, Man Eatin Mandy, Jock-ular Jen. Post Flying Burrito ingestion.
Good thing these two freaks aren't responsible for anything serious.
This is Mandy Lozano. Do not be fooled by her smiley face. She is a Grrrrr...animal!
It is the Devil herself. After her time trial, Charm got out her pitchfork and went to the top of the hill to cheer on the rest of the racers. But the state troopers hauled her off due to her indecent exposure, or was it her threatening quads?
Kelly tries to hold the Lentils in.

Jen samples mooonshine at the gas station.
So this was written on the bathroom wall at the border of Missouri and Arkansas. Thems is fightin wurds.

Joe Martin Stage Race-Pre race show

We have a big team for this race! Me, Kristin, Jen, Michelle, Mandy, Charm and Kelly. Yippeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!
We arrived in Arkansas and the deathstar van started to cough and spit. Turns out the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Aamco is taking care of us.

Once we arrived at our host house, we are a little surprised. It was more of a ghost host experience, cuz the house was totally empty. Our host Wanda just moved out and is lettign us stay in her last home. We procured some chairs, pots pans and air mattresses. Terry thought we needed to spruce up our new home with some flowers.

Okily Dokily, it's Oklahoma!

So we found the road to where the WMDs are made....

Which made the next exit seem very surreal. It's been a lifelong dream of mine to see the inside of Dee-luxe Peterbilt Truck.
Skeeter was very organized.
The bedroom in the truck, it was bigger than you might think.
You can find Him anywhere.
I did not knwo that the Tribes have their own fuzz.
America really knows how to offer selection. See below for more on this theme.
It looks like candy, intentionally, but these are multi-flavored cigars. There is a lot of wacky tobacky here in OK. Like watermelon, rum, and chocolate flavored smokes.
We were driving, as always, and I was watching "Iknow what you did last summer" and right when the kids in the car hit the guy on the road, we hit a bird. It was made me jump cuz Michelle kinda yelped and it was like we hit someone too, kinda. Anyway, the bird got pinballed through all the bikes and wheels and left its feathers all over the place.

Texasssssssssssssssssss-It never ends.

We drove from Silver City to Ft Worth, which took us about 12 hours. Texas really doesn't have this much "blue" in it's state.
If you want to order one of these for Mother's Day, they are at Snappy Mart in Fillerup, Texas.
Jen shows off her new identity. From Austrailian Outback to Texan Redneck.

This gas station sold spurs and chaps, and they were much cheaper than in San Francisco!

My Achilles Gila

Michelle in the driver's seat on stage 5.
Stage 3, with wounds now bandaged and everything else bruised. Except our egos.

All smiles before the massive pile up on Stage 2. Jen, our Aussie, is far right. But left leaning.
When you look like this, you end up in the TOP Ten. Yay Kristin. I was 55th. Michelle was 39th, Jen was 50th.
All you need is duct tape and a cone and it is officially an NRC stage race TT.
Wow we look cheery considering the TT efffort. Suspicious almost.

Bisbee Redux

The vultures are in between meals in the bathroom.
Michelle notices who spies on you while in the rocky shower...
Note the Maryjane vines hanging from above.
This is not a small house, it is a big Michelle.
Arthouse to go with artcar.
Homes nestled into the mining town of Bisbee.
It is like One Nation Under Lionel, especially with his head looming over the mountains.

Tour of Gila Day 2- hell

No it is not true, none of the Cheerwine girls rode in ambulance. But, we did leave blood, skin, some bar tape, some shreds of assorted clothing and shoes on the road at mile 36 due to a 30 woman pile up.

What happened is epic. Kristin, Jen and I had so many mechanicals that by the time we got rolling, we were 10 minutes off the group. What to do when your GC girl is there? Go into Team Time Trial mode. Since the crash happened 1 mile before the sprint points, we were gonna be working hard to get on . Well, 1 hour and 25 miles later, we caught back on. RIDICULOUS. We were toast. And then the climbing started. Be were burnt toast.

GC is a mess for us, but we are still racing! Props go to Chris, our supporter, for making our bikes work again, Mike Tomate for wheels and getting us rolling, Carmen for her medical help and Dr. Sergeant for post race clean up. Pics later.

Krstin Armstrong won.

Good job to Penny for her 6th place.

Brain is tired and legs are lumpy.

Tour of Gila, Day 1 TT

After a drive from Bisbee to Tucson to pick up 2 more teammates, and team support, we took off for Silver City, New Mexico. Michelle and I picked up Kristin from Florida, Jen from Australia, and Chris, Michelle's fiance.

Off we go to drive into the night. We arrived at our super neat hosts home, which was an OG country-style home, built for a judge back in 1904.

The TT put Kristin in 10th, Michelle in 39th and the Aussie and I further back, as to not steal their limelight.

Anne Samplonius (biovail) rocked the house with her win. She is so hot right now, that when she finished, she had to throw her bike on the ground to extinguish the flames coming from it.

Other notes:
Despite Sarah's best efforts to turbo boost her time trial by eating hummus with raw garlic, her lack of aero equipment outweighed the self propulsion effects of the food.

Athens and Roswell- yay Team!

Incredibly belated congrats to Benjamin, I mean Kelly, on her podium at Roswell crit and 4th at Athens last weekend. It is a great show of teammwork and we are so close to a win, so watch out!
